Kirie Goshima ( Goshima Kirie), also spelled Kiri or Kyrie, is the main protagonist and narrator of Uzumaki. She is a Kurôzu-Cho student until Chapter 9 and a recurring target of the spirals.
Appearance: Kirie Goshima
Kirie has short hair. Kirie is a pale-skinned girl of average height and build with long, straight ginger hair with a side-fringe tucked behind her ear, large blue eyes (which were hazel in volume 1), thin eyebrows, and she appears to be wearing lipstick/heavy mascara. Her hair becomes cursed with spirals and tries to kill her on multiple occasions in Chapter 6: Medusa, prompting Shuichi Saito to cut it short, and her hair is now worn in a short, straight, layered crop that ends around her ears.
Kirie is mostly seen dressed for school. She is seen wearing what appears to be a winter uniform up until Medusa, which consists of a maroon blazer over a white turtleneck sweater and a black pleated skirt, as well as black school shoes and white ankle socks. Instead of the sweater and blazer, Medusa wears a long-sleeved white collared shirt with a black ribbon tied in a bow. From then on, her school uniform is similar, but her white blouse has been replaced by a short-sleeved variation. She frequently wears a long-sleeved button-up shirt tucked into jeans or a long-sleeved shirt with a skirt when she is not wearing her uniform. She is usually depicted with an exasperated expression, though this could simply be her neutral expression.
Personality: Kirie Goshima
Kirie is a serious, practical, and mature girl who gets easily irritated and is rarely in the mood for jokes. She can be harsh, blunt, and harshly critical of others at times, but she is also gentle and caring, and she is capable of understanding others, even if they irritate her. She is protective of her younger brother, Mitsuo Goshima, despite the fact that he annoys her in typical brotherly fashion. Kirie prepares and delivers food on a regular basis to a depressed, reclusive Shuichi Saito who would otherwise refuse to eat.
Obsession with the Spiral (Parts 1 and 2): Kirie Goshima
Kirie is seen at the beginning of this chapter standing on a cliff overlooking the town, pondering future chapters in the past tense, narration-style. She then realises she is late for her meeting with her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, at the town train station. On the way, however, she passes Shuichi’s house and notices his father, who is preoccupied with a spiral-shaped shell. She tries to talk to him, but he is unresponsive, so she walks away.
The Mark
Kirie Goshima is at school with her friend Azami Kurotani, a popular girl who is constantly followed around by crush boys. Azami appears to be nice enough, but things go wrong when she insists on meeting Shuichi Saito, who detects that she has been contaminated by the spiral. Azami becomes obsessed with Shuichi after this, stalking him, screaming at him, and banging on his door nearly every night. Kirie tells her to leave him alone, but Azami flees after telling Kirie that she will make Shuichi like her.
