In 1992, Alejandro Alec Mapa made a comeback to Broadway in A Little Hotel on the Side, a reworking of Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières L’Hotel du liber échange. The next year, Mapa returned to Broadway in a Timon of Athens production that was inspired by the Stratford Festival. Off-Broadway, Mapa was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award in 2001 for his work in Jessica Hagedorn’s play Dogeaters. He also appeared in all three plays of Chay Yew’s Whitelands trilogy, a group of plays about gay Asian men.
He has appeared as a guest on numerous shows on television, such as The Jamie Foxx Show, Roseanne, Seinfeld, NYPD Blue, Friends, Murder One, and Dharma & Greg. On the Logo original stand-up comedy series Wisecrack, Alejandro Alec Mapa was a featured comic. featured on the television show Desperate Housewives in 2006 as Vern, Gabrielle’s personal shopper. In the 2006–2010 television series Ugly Betty, he played Suzuki St. Pierre, the flamboyant host of a made-up gossip and news programme. On the animated series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in the World, which ran from 2007 to 2009, he provided the voice of Rick’s outspokenly gay uncle Bakla. Along with other roles, Mapa has appeared in the movies Bright Lights, Big City, Playing by Heart, Connie and Carla, and Marley & Me. He appeared in the films Tru Loved and Super Sweet 16: The Movie. In the motion picture You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, he also appeared as a stylist.
Private life
Because he is gay, Mapa supports numerous initiatives that benefit Asian Americans and the gay and lesbian communities. After dating Jamison Jamie Hebert in 2002, Mapa wed him in a civil ceremony in 2008. In the first episode of the television show The Gossip Queens, Mapa revealed that he and his husband had adopted a 5-year-old boy. In 2010, they adopted their child. Alejandro Alec Mapa has Filipino ancestry.
